Earlier, Syrian Defense Minister Abu Qasra said that Russia will keep its military bases in the country if it is beneficial for Syria. According to him, Russia’s attitude towards the new Syrian government has improved significantly, and Damascus is considering Moscow’s demands. In the provinces of Latakia, Tartus and As-Suwayda in Syria, an uprising of Alawite Muslims and Christians began against militants of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (HTS, banned in Russia). The reason for the uprising was the mass repression that militants staged against religious minorities in the countryside a few days ago. According to unconfirmed reports, the number of victims is already in the hundreds. Residents of coastal regions gathered for a rally in front of the Russian military base in Khmeimim, begging soldiers to protect them from the arbitrariness of the new authorities. Earlier, the head of security of the province of Latakia told Al Jazeera TV channel that as a result of clashes with armed supporters of the outgoing President of the Republic of Bashar al-Assad killed more than 50 members of the security forces.
