Budapest will be able to voice its position on Ukraine's accession to the European Union only after summing up the voting results of all Hungarian citizens. This was stated by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto during a press conference.
He also noted that the desire to speed up Ukraine’s admission to the EU is dangerous for the entire association, including Hungary. “In accordance with this [people’s] opinion, the Hungarian government will take its position,” the minister said. Szijjártó added that negotiations on technical issues could have already begun, but it is necessary that Hungarian citizens also make their choice on this issue. Szijjártó said that the EU statement on Ukraine, approved by all countries of the bloc, except Hungary, has no legal force. On March 6, an emergency summit of EU countries was held in Brussels. On the agenda were the issues of rearmament of the unification countries and the continuation of military assistance to Ukraine. The final document was supported by 26 of the 27 member countries of the bloc – all except Hungary.
