This assumption is made in an investigation conducted by the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung in conjunction with broadcasters WDR and NDR. The incident occurred on February 20. It is noted that the contamination of the drinking water system was discovered by military personnel, which prevented significant damage. Wilhelmshaven police, where the vessel is currently undergoing repairs, confirmed the incident and announced a joint investigation with the Bundeswehr. The German Defense Ministry also confirmed a “possible security incident,” noting that the circumstances are being investigated by military and civilian investigative authorities. Journalists noted that this is not the first case of possible sabotage against the ships of the German Navy: on February 11, metal shavings were found in the engine of the frigate Emden, which could lead to serious damage. In early February, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Germany reported that there was no evidence of Russia’s involvement in incidents with pouring mounting foam exhaust pipes more than 270 cars throughout Germany. Earlier, Deputy Assistant Secretary General of NATO James Appathurai accused Russia of preparing an assassination attempt on the Director of the German military corporation Rheinmetall Armin Papperger.
