“Izvestia”: farms fear drought and crop loss in 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture and weather forecasters have so far refrained from negative forecasts regarding dangerous aridity. At the same time, representatives of farms point to the lack of storage moisture reserves in the soil: in 2025, corn, sunflower, sugar beets, rapeseed and soybeans may suffer from crisis weather conditions, in addition to wheat and barley. The aridity of the soil is especially uncharacteristic for the Central Federal District and is formed due to the absence of snow cover throughout the winter. The National Union of Agricultural Insurers of Russia (NSA) told Izvestia that the decrease in stocks of accumulated moisture in the soil makes plants more vulnerable to the effects of adverse events during the season. For now, the future situation does not seem to automatically lead to lower yields. In fact, it largely depends on what will be the synoptic conditions in the early spring in a particular area. In addition, in 2025, the total sown area is projected to be higher than last year: almost 84 million hectares, of which 55.8 million hectares are spring. Since the beginning of the year, the condition of crops has significantly improved: now 87% of winter crops are in good and satisfactory condition. At the same time, it is planned to increase the sowing of oilseeds and fodder crops, sugar beets, vegetables and potatoes in the organized sector. Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture sent a notice to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the high risk of rising the cost of milling wheat due to a decrease in its production in the country. Gross wheat harvest in Russia in 2025, according to forecasts, will decrease by 4.7%, to 78.7 million tons. In 2024, this figure has already fallen by 11% to 82.6 million tons. It is noted that the share of flour in the cost of bread is 18-25%, the growth of grain prices pushes bread to rise in price. For a month, the cost of bread products for retail chains was raised by such large manufacturers as "Karavai" and BKH "Kolomensky".
