📝 Summary
In the Sakhalin region, a mutation of bird flu has been identified, which can increase virulence and ensure adaptation to mammalian cells, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported.
The mutation was discovered as a result of last year’s monitoring. It examined more than 15 thousand samples of biomaterial taken from wild and domestic birds, as well as pigs. In addition, 7.8 thousand samples were taken from people who were in contact with the bird. It turned out that all viruses, with the exception of those isolated from Sakhalin birds, do not contain increased pathogenicity and are not resistant to drugs, writes TASS. The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova previously said about the possibility of interspecific transition of the avian influenza virus and the corresponding risks. However, in December last year, she reported that in Russia there are no cases of human infection with bird flu, Popova said that new measures to prevent the disease in the country are not required. Dr. Alexander Myasnikov also said that bird flu continues to pose a threat to both poultry and human health. One of the biggest concerns about the virus, he said, is its ability to mutate and pass from birds to humans. However, bird flu does not yet have properties that allow it to spread quickly among people.
