Participants of the Mayakovsky Theatre Laboratory staged a new performance

The play "Beacon plus Butusovtsy". Results introduces the works of young directors - participants of the creative laboratory. They were asked to choose a Russian story of the XX century. Three sketches were selected, which made up one performance. The results of the stage experiment were seen by Anna Schuster. To see the new generation of the Russian directorial school and find out what the theatrical language is chosen by the younger generation – such tasks were set by Yegor Peregudov when he created a laboratory for young directors. He invited eight students of Yuri Butusov’s course at GITIS to create sketches for performances based on Russian stories of the XX century. The three best became parts of the new performance of the Mayakovsky Theatre. “For us, this is not a simple genre, since it is prose, not drama, here is the first exam for a director – how to transfer prose into the language of the theater,” says the artistic director of the Mayakovsky Theater Egor Peregudov. Nabokov, Andreev, Gorky. The young directors turned to three completely different authors to explore the common human nature, and like the hero of the story “The Scoundrel”, who escapes from a duel, to understand what death and life are. “The author paradoxically puts us in extreme circumstances where life is revealed. That is, such an attempt to push back from death and go into some life, hope, explains director Alexander Cerenja. Hope and bright sadness are imbued with the work of Yegor Kovalev. He chose the story of Leonid Andreev “Herman and Martha”. This is a poetic story about two old men who decide to get married, but under the law of their country, people over the age of 50 are required to ask permission to marry their children. They will be against it, and the end of the story will not be happy. Interestingly, in this production, the actors are silent. Today there is so much information noise that silence sometimes sounds much more piercing than words. “I really want this fragility, trepidation to preserve and convey to the viewer,” says director Egor Kovalev. The performance is completed by a sketch based on the work of Maxim Gorky – “Passion-face”. In the artwork, the director adhered to minimalism, and in drama - as he says himself - he wanted to bet on something small and at the same time the most important thing. This is the main thing Ivan Orlov found from Gorky. The hero of his sketch is a kvass merchant, he raises a drunken, walking woman from a puddle and escorts her to the house, where he meets her son - not by years serious and at the same time dreamy. “Maybe it’s just about the fact that a child with his rich inner world, imagination has to fantasize about the topics that surround him,” says director Ivan Orlov. His main dream is to walk in a clean field. Did God make the field? the boy asks his grown-up friend, afraid to fall asleep lest he leave.
