The Kandalaksha district court considered on February 20 the case of a train collision, during which he changed the measure of restraint against the locomotive driver and his assistant. During the meeting, the petitions of the preliminary investigation bodies to extend the period of detention in respect of the locomotive driver and his assistant were considered. On December 18, 2024, due to a violation of the rules of traffic safety and operation of railway transport, a side collision of the tail of the freight train with a passenger train en route Murmansk - St. Petersburg occurred. As a result of the incident, passengers received injuries of varying severity, two died. "In the court hearing, the defendants and their defense counsel objected to the satisfaction of the investigator's request, asked to choose a milder preventive measure," the press service of the court said. After examining all the case materials, the Kandalaksha District Court, taking into account the identity of the accused who are not convicted, have stable social ties, do not deny their involvement in the incriminated crime, changed the preventive measure from detention to house arrest and imposed a number of restrictions. The rulings of the Kandalaksha District Court have not entered into legal force.
