📝 Summary

The exhibition includes works by famous artists of Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

"The French Museum of Prince Yusupov" - The Yaroslavl Art Museum presents painting and sculpture from one of the most significant collections in Russia. The exhibits were brought from the collection of the museum-reserve "Arkhangelskoye." Marina Romakina has more details. The main work of life and creativity is still missing - "The Bronze Horseman." Etienne Falcone hones his skills in depicting allegories and mythological heroes. And his marble bather becomes the subject of the collection of Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov - one of the most significant collections in Russia at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. "Yusupov is a very educated person. He received a European education. He traveled himself, personally knew Diderot. And he saw the exhibitions and works that were offered during the period of French contemporary artists. He himself formed his collection," says Alla Khatyukhina, director of the Yaroslavl Art Museum. As the director of the Hermitage, Yusupov helped in acquiring magnificent examples of painting and sculpture for royal persons. The so-called "French" part of the prince's collection has arrived in Yaroslavl. Here you can find lush rococo, strict forms of neoclassicism, and romantic heroes. Some paintings were commissioned personally. Giving the residents of Yaroslavl the opportunity to get acquainted with them is a great success: colleagues from "Arkhangelskoye" are extremely reluctant to send their treasures on journeys. "Our museum is only the third project outside the Moscow region. Before that, we had one exhibition in Kazan, Novosibirsk, and Yaroslavl. And we haven't traveled anywhere else," says Olga Nesterceva, deputy director general of the museum-reserve "Arkhangelskoye." The prince's pride was not only the collection itself, but also the first private catalog in Russia with descriptions, and most importantly, images of the originals. Although quite schematic. "Serfs who were artists were involved, and they made drawings based on the existing paintings in the collection," notes Alexey Fedorchuk, deputy director of the Yaroslavl Art Museum. According to memories, both the prince himself and his descendants always allowed anyone interested to admire the collection. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was called a true museum of French art.
