As Syrnikov noted, the first version of the origin of the phrase is technical. In the past, ovens took a lot of time to heat up. In this regard, the first pancake was baked on a skillet that was not heated enough, and it could turn out uneven, sticking to the surface of the skillet or "lumpy." The second version has a ritual significance. "In Russia, pancakes had a sacred meaning and were often used in rituals, for example, in memorial traditions. The first pancake was given to the spirits of ancestors or the poor to honor their memory," the chef explained. He added that for this reason, the pancake was not intended to be perfectly round and fully cooked. Nowadays, this expression is used metaphorically, meaning that the first attempt in any endeavor may be unsuccessful.
