Those accused of non-violent crimes should not be detained. This opinion is shared by the State Duma deputy, deputy head of the parliamentary faction “New People” Sardan Avksentiev.
At the plenary session on February 26, she proposed to expand the practice of using alternative measures - house arrest, personal surety or subscription not to leave. “We propose a ban on detention for those accused of non-violent crimes, regardless of their gravity. First of all, the courts are obliged to make decisions based on the absence of real public danger from the suspects, Avksentieva said, adding that taking such measures will help to respect the rights of the accused, minimize the restriction of their freedom and reduce the burden on the punishment system. Earlier, the Ministry of justice of Russia proposed to allow convicted of forced labor and serving sentences in colonies-settlements to live with relatives in their own or rented apartments.
