📝 Summary

In the Baltic countries, there has been a sharp increase in electricity prices following the decision of the authorities of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia to withdraw from the common energy ring with Russia and Belarus (BRELL) and connect to the European energy system. This was reported by the Estonian public radio ERR.

It is noted that after synchronizing the energy system of the region with continental Europe, electricity became 60 times more expensive for the residents of the Baltic States compared to, for example, Finland. According to the energy exchange NordPool, the average price of electricity in the region after Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn withdrew from BRELL does not drop below 10 cents per 1 kWh (or €100 per 1 MWh). In the Baltic countries, electricity costs €61.05 per 1 MWh, while in Finland, for comparison, it is €1.12 per 1 MWh. The Baltic States announced their withdrawal from BRELL on February 8 of this year. The region stopped importing Russian electricity back in May 2022, explaining this decision as a desire for energy independence from Russia.
