📝 Summary

The exhibition is dedicated to the unofficial culture of the 60s.

The Voznesensky Center opened the exhibition "Dark Thaw". The exhibition is dedicated to the unofficial culture of the 60s – more precisely, what we do not know about it. As the curators say: the decade, which is seen as an era of optimism and romance, contained a variety of moods and ideas about life. Anastasia Pavlova will continue. Thaw is a time of recovery in the life of the country. The Dark Thaw is the other side of the Soviet culture of the 60s. “Vechtomov’s painting is probably the personification of the entire exhibition. We are all accustomed to the ceremonial thaw, to the brightness, to the bright side, to bright faces, bright sun, good weather in the paintings. Here we see a completely different mood, says the director of the Voznesensky Center Olga Vartseva. The entry point for this study is a hall called the Twilight City. There are strange plots, figures, images that have no place in the aesthetics of thawing culture: the dead side by side with the living, the ruins - with nature, and the characters that inhabit the canvases came out of the dark alleys and courtyards of Leningrad and Moscow. For me, there was an important plot of the clash between underground Leningrad and underground Moscow. Because they are rarely seen together. And we decided to connect primarily Lianozovtsev and Arefievtsev. And to show that for them this living, dead city, a dark alley, a barracks was such a common denominator, explains the curator of the exhibition Tatiana Sohareva. Arefievtsy are members of an informal association of independent Leningrad artists, Lianozovtsy are Moscow post-vanguardists. The curators investigated another large group of artists – the Yuzhinsky circle of those who gathered in the communal apartment of the writer Yuri Mamleev in Yuzhinsky Lane. And he sought the keys to the secrets of the world in Eastern philosophy, the works of the holy fathers. Their meetings are gatherings with an abundance of alcohol on the canvases, the artists ironized themselves. We're in this room called bad company. It's like we're in this interior. Maybe it's really a drink. You can see the characters waiting for us. Yes, quite strange, maybe in some sense unpleasant, disturbing. Urban landscapes are already floating, they are already filled with surreal characters. Characters of fairy tales, myths and just some imaginary series are mixed in very strange such proportions, says Dmitry Hvorostov, curator of exhibition projects of the Voznesensky Center. Aleksey Smirnov (Von Rauch) is the author of The Death Room. Perhaps this is how the fate of the hero of the picture in this world ended. But the fate of the hero's soul continues in the following halls. Boris Sveshnikov is a painter, a graphic artist. Accused of anti-Soviet propaganda, he spent eight years in camps. He said, “This is the best thing that ever taught him.” In his paintings, the afterlife passes through the grave fog. “The room itself is like a columbarium or a cenotaph. Some kind of solemn architecture. Where a person turns out to be yes, maybe burying their loved ones or himself as if passing into the other world, explains Dmitry Hvorostov, curator of exhibition projects of the Voznesensky Center. Natalia Prokuratova is responsible for the other world at the exhibition. On hand-made tapestries, the symbols of kineticists are lightning, crystal, butterfly. Curators call the exhibition the hidden core of the thaw. Here the individuality and its personal search in matters of being are awakened.
