📝 Summary

The task of increasing milk production by 20% is facing the agricultural sector of Russia.

Scientists of the North Caucasus Federal University are working on proposals aimed at eliminating the shortage of domestic breeds and increasing the share of dairy farming in the country. At the XVI Congress of the National Union of Milk Producers, a key task for the dairy industry was identified, which related to the project “Technological support for food security”. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and market analysts, the level of self-sufficiency in the dairy sector has remained at 85 percent over the past few years. Over the past 20-25 years, the total number of dairy cattle in Russia has halved. Experts attribute this to the import of purebred animals and the insufficient use of modern genetic technologies. The North Caucasus Federal University is engaged in import substitution in this area, noted the dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Andrei Naghdalyan. “The increase in yields is directly related to the feed base and the availability of dairy cattle. Any transportation of livestock adversely affects yields, which leads to economic losses. An alternative solution can be the transplantation of fertilized eggs from highly productive animals to local livestock, so scientists of the North Caucasus Federal University are working to eliminate stress factors and correct the physiological state of animals with the help of pharmacological drugs, said Andrei Naghdalyan. To support dairy production, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation has increased funding for the development of dairy products and breeding livestock since 2022. In 2023, about 560.5 thousand tons of milk were produced in the Stavropol Territory. In 2024, thanks to the implementation of investment projects, production increased by 2.5 percent. In addition to cow’s milk, efforts to promote sheep’s and goat’s milk have also intensified. Despite stable prices for dairy products, in 2024, the economic availability of milk for the population was below the recommended standards of the Ministry of Health (73.8 percent). Experts believe that by 2030 it is necessary to increase the number of dairy cattle on farms from 2.52 to 2.89 million heads and increase the productivity of breeding cows to 11 tons of milk per year. To meet domestic demand, it is necessary to produce 47-48 million tons of milk, increasing production by 2 million tons annually, Sergey Povetkin, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences, expert of the Faculty of Agriculture of NCFU, summed up.
